World Cup fans and a host of Brazilian feastsIF IT wasn’t for a few happy twists of fate, Andre Felicio could have been constructing bridges instead of serving up the hearty meats of Brazilian barbecue. Now the owner of three Braza restaurants, he originally trained as a civil engineer in his native Brazil.

Felicio moved to Sydney in 2000 and ended up working as a waiter in a restaurant which specialised in churrasco, the Portuguese term for charcoal barbecue.

“I came to study English and watch the Olympics,” he says. “I started working in a Brazilian restaurant, cutting the meats at the table, then I went to the kitchen, preparing the sides. Then I ended up on the barbecue.”

While he’s changed aspects of his menu to suit local tastes, with the World Cup looming, Felicio is diplomatic when pressed on which team he will support.

“I’ll go for Brazil and Australia for sure,” he says.” If Australia goes through they might even play Brazil, but then I’ll have to go for Brazil.”
